Even nurses can have a less stressful holiday season and a better work-life balance with these 5 simple tips to help you get ready.Successfully managing a work-life balance over the holidays is difficult for everyone, but it’s especially tough in a stressful field like nursing.  With frequently changing schedules and emotional ties to work, it may seem impossible to manage, but a few simple tips can help you get control over your work-life balance this holiday season.

Print Out a Holiday Planner

A planner is a great way to get yourself organized and set timelines.  A quick internet search will help you find plenty of free holiday planners to suit your needs, or you can check out this one.  Even in this digital world, it’s still nice to have a paper and pencil planner to help you map out your holidays at a glance.  A planner is a great way to put a plan in place so that you’re tackling all that needs to be done ahead of time and not scrambling at the last minute.

Get Small Things Done Ahead of Time

Start thinking about anything that can be done ahead of time.  Have an extra 30 minutes one morning?  Chop up some veggies and seasonings for your holiday meals and freeze them for the big day.  Or, wrap a present so that you’re not trying to get them all done in a panic the night before.  Spend a few minutes jotting down all the small things that go into getting ready for the holiday, and you’ll be amazed how much you can get down ahead of time when things are less stressful.

Leave Work at Work

Did you know that exercise and sleep are two of the most effective stress management strategies? Even if you don’t have much time for exercise, taking a brisk walk around the block is a great way to clear your head.  Turning off all electronic devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, computers, and TVs) and reading a book at least 30 minutes before going to bed makes it easier to fall asleep and get a great night’s sleep.

Just Say “No”

This is the time of year that we are asked to commit to a million different things.  Can you bring a snack to the 7th grade holiday party?  Do you want to be a part of our gift exchange?  Do you want to take the kids to see “Scrooge” this year?  You don’t have to say “yes” to it all.  Check out this great list of ways to say “no”.

Give Yourself Permission to be Less than Perfect

This one is really tough,  but we need to remember what’s important over the holidays.  You can’t get it all done perfectly, so don’t let trivial things stress you out.  Remember that spending time with those we love is what this time of year is all about.

So, are you ready to get through this holiday season with less stress?  Even nurses can enjoy a work-life balance over the holidays with just a little planning ahead.
