The start of the year is a great time to set some goals and resolutions for your career.  Whether you are happy with your current position or looking to make changes, New Year's resolutions for the medical professional can help keep your career in perspective throughout the year.So many New Year’s resolutions are focused on diet and exercise, but the start of the year is also a great time to set some goals and resolutions for your career.  Whether you are happy with your current position or looking to make changes, New Year’s resolutions for the medical professional can help keep your career in perspective throughout the year.

Do a Career Evaluation

The beginning of the year is a great time to do a health check on your career.  It’s easy to lose focus as the year goes on, so take some time now to figure out where you are professionally.  Are you happy with your current job?  What needs improvement?  Set new career goals for yourself and write them down so that you can come back to them throughout the year to see how you are doing.

Learn One New Skill

A great goal each year is to be able to add a new bullet point to the “Professional Development” or “Education” section of your resume.  After you figure out which new skill you’d like to learn, talk to your employer about the possibility of in-house training.  If it’s not a skill you can learn at your facility, start looking into outside education that you can take on yourself.  Make sure to research soon so you can budget for any education expenses and get started before the end of the year.

Step Outside Of Your Comfort Zone

Are there any new responsibilities you can contribute to in your current role?  Talk to your supervisor about expanding your role.  Don’t be afraid to push yourself to do something that’s completely new or something you’re nervous about doing.  There’s always a learning curve, but you’ll never know if you are good at something if you don’t try.

Keep Up With The Latest Industry News

Set aside a few minutes each day for reading over the headlines in the medical/nursing industry and your field.  There are probably only a few articles a week that warrant reading in entirety, but by scanning daily you’ll stay on top of the latest developments.  Subscribing to related blogs or industry publications are a great way to have this information sent to you without having to find articles yourself.

Make Time For Play

Having a work-life balance has obvious benefits for your personal life, but it can also greatly improve your overall job satisfaction.  Make it a goal to give yourself plenty of downtime from your job to maintain a healthy social life.  Not only will you help prevent job burnout, but you’ll also be happier with your day-to-day job tasks.

Cheers to a new year!  The possibilities are endless.  Which New Year’s resolutions are you going to keep to make this the best year yet?
